All-
Thanks to all for the responses and great advice. I was able to find
a replacement spring at MacMaster-Carr. I thought I'd take the
opportunity to provide details in case someone else runs into this
problem.
The existing spring was a SUSPA Liftline with a 150N (33 lb-force)
opening force. This particular spring had integral clevis ends on
both the rod and cylinder. The springs McMaster-Carr carry didn't
have the integral ends so I had to buy ends along with the spring.
The parts I ended up purchasing were as follows:
M-C Part Number: 9416 K112 - Gas Spring with Threaded Ends, 40 lb.
force, 5.90" extended length, 2.36" stroke
Cost: $8.28/ea
M-C Part Number: 9416 K84 - Zinc Eyelet End Fitting for M6 Thread Gas
Spring With Threaded Ends
Cost: $1.25/ea., Qty 2 Required
Total Cost with Ground Shipping: $16.05
When the parts arrived, I discovered the spring is made by the same
company (SUSPA) as the original spring. All of the parts were pretty
much identical dimensionally to the factory cylinder. The only
modification I had to make was to file the edges of the bracket that
holds the rod end of the cylinder to the lid of the safe to provide a
little more clearance for the bulkier thread-on clevis ends. Other
than that it was pretty much a drop in replacement.
The safe now functions perfectly.
Again, thanks for all the help.
